'Carina' intensifies slightly off Ilocos Norte

MANILA, Philippines -- Storm warning signals remained raised over parts of Northern and Central Luzon on Monday as Tropical Storm Carina (international name: Nida) intensified slightly off the coast of Ilocos Norte.
 
According to PAGASA's Severe Weather Bulletin on Monday morning, the storm was last seen 145 km north northeast of Laoag City in Ilocos Norte and is forecast to move northwest at 20 kph. The weather bureau estimates that the storm will be 635 kilometers of Batanes and out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Tuesday morning.
 
Carina has maximum sustained winds of up to 105 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 135 kph.
 
The storm can bring moderate to heavy rain within its 500-km diameter. PAGASA also said fisherfolk may experience rough to very rough seas in the seaboards of Northern and Central Luzon and the western and southern seaboards of Southern Luzon.
 
Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 2 remains raised over the following provinces:
 
  • Ilocos Norte
  • Apayao
  • Abra
  • Northern part of Cagayan, including Babuyan Group of Islands
 
Those areas can experience winds of 61-120 kph in the next 24 hours. Waves in the open sea can reach 4-14 meters high in these areas.
 
Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 1 is raised over the following areas, which can experience winds of 30-60 kph in the next 36 hours:
 
  • Ilocos Sur
  • Batanes Group of Islands
  • Rest of Cagayan
  • Isabela
  • Kalinga
  • Mt. Province
  • Benguet
  • Ifugao
  • La Union
  • Pangasinan
  • Isabela
 
Waves in the open sea in these areas can reach heights of 1.25-4 meters.
