Duterte to retire, won't run for president in 2016
MANILA, Philippines - Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte announced over the weekend that he will retire from politics, not run for a higher post in 2016.
Duterte also announced that he would like his daughter, ,Inday Sara, to be his successor.
"It's not for political dynasty na sinasabi nila, wala kami niyan... But si Inday can carry on as mayor. I will retire after my term," the mayor said during a press conference last Saturday.
The first woman mayor of Davao City, Inday Sara held the position from 2010 to 2013 and caught attention from the media when she mauled a court sheriff during a violent demolition of informal settlers in 2011.
Despite groups calling on him to run for President in 2016, Duterte announced that he has no plans of running for a higher post and that he is planning to retire from politics due to his medical condition.
The mayor ordered billboards urging him to run for President to be removed.
"Remove all the billboards, yung mga 'Duterte for President' tanggalin niyo yan... I do not like it. I don not want to be a hypocrite... I will never ever dream of what I cannot be," the Davao City mayor said.
Duterte earlier said that he would rather die than become president and that he wants to kill people behind the "Duterte for President Movement".
