MANILA, Philippines - Children will continue to be taught about peace in schools to develop a culture of peace among them.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro said the role of education is important in the peace process.

“DepEd has always advocated peace,” he said.

“Even before peace process, we put ‘zone of peace’ banners in our schools to emphasize our support to the process.”

Luistro said students are the first to be affected in any armed conflict when classes are canceled and the learning process is disrupted.

“We are not only recipients of a successful peace process, we are also active participants in the process,” he said. “We include peace in our curriculum. We bring the dialogue of different cultures. In any conflict, as long as it can be discussed, it can be resolved.”

The Department of Education’s peace education program is comprised of four pillars: learning to learn, learning to do, learning to give and learning to live together.

The DepEd has established the Northern Mindanao Peace Village (NMPV) to give the youth a chance to learn to live together.

They are given an opportunity to share their experiences, ideas and insights among participants belonging to different ethnic groups and religion.
