Ex-Chief Justice Andres Narvasa passes away

MANILA, Philippines -Former Chief Justice Andres Narvasa passed away on Thursday morning, the Supreme Court said.

The SC Public Information Office (PIO) said in its Twitter account that Narvasa died at 6:05 a.m. today.

He was 84.

A radio report said  Narvasa succumbed to complication due to pneumonia.

Narvasa was appointed on April 10, 1986 to the High Court as Associate Justice by the late President Corazon Aquino, mother of President Benigno Aquino III.

Narvasa served the SC until Nov. 30, 1998.

Before joining the high court, Narvasa was also the general counsel of the Agrava Fact-Finding Board that was formed to probe the killing of Ninoy Aquino Jr.

After his retirement, Narvasa became the legal counsel of Estrada during the ex-chief executive's impeachment trial in 2000.

Narvasa was also a former Dean of the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Civil Law.
