INFOGRAPHIC: How does the Alcaraz compare with other Navy vessels?

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Navy's official Facebook page for newly acquired warship BRP Ramon Alcaraz (PF 16) created a visual comparison of old Navy vessels with the country's second Hamilton-class cutter.

While the first vessels under the First Republic under President Emilio Aguinaldo's administration were seized vehicles such as the PT-41 Elco, the country acquired small torpedo boats called "Q-boats" to form its Offshore Patrol fleet under Field Marshal Douglas MacArthur after 1935.

"(The Q-boat fleet) are relatively small (but) have distinct effect in compelling any hostile force to approach cautiously and by small detachments," MacArthur said.

According to the Navy report, the boat took down three of nine Japanese Zeros on January 1942 under the command of World War II war hero Commodore Ramon Alcaraz, to whom today's 378-feet long BRP Alcaraz PF-16 frigate is named after.

"The Alcaraz will serve to be a platform for the next giant leap in the capability and training of the Philippine Navy: a further step forward in the path to naval excellence pioneered by Ramon Alcaraz and his fellow war heroes," the post said.

The Alcaraz, to be commissioned this September, will boost the Navy's maritime efforts in guarding the West Philippine Sea amid the dispute over coastal territories with China.

It is expected to stop at Hawaii this weekend for refueling and is due to finally arrive in Manila in August.

China's People Liberation Army Navy, meanwhile, is acknowledged to have among the largest fleets in the world with at least 71 active destroyers and frigates and 62 submarines.

The United States Navy is currently the largest in the world having at least 79 destroyers and frigates and 71 submarines, according to public records.
