Where to find the perfect tassel earrings

Model, entrepreneur and interior designer Maggie Wilson-Consunji’s flair for playing up neutral wardrobe elements with striking accessories makes her the perfect muse for Heyjow’s Savannah-inspired African collection.

Dear Rissa,

I’m loving the tassel earring trend. I’m looking for a versatile but special pair — something I can wear even after the trend has died down? Hope you can give suggestions.

I love statement earrings! They instantly dress up your look and wonderfully draw attention to the face. When wearing bold, eye-catching earrings like the tassel ones, always make it the star of a relatively simple outfit and everything else should just play a supporting role.

My go-to for beautiful earrings right now is local accessories brand Heyjow. The brand was started by jewelry designer Joana Gube in 2013 and she has been creating pieces that reflect her love for traveling. Her latest collection is an African-inspired one. I’m madly in love with the tassel earrings that graze over the shoulders and the special way she mixed unorthodox elements like plush pompoms with the bohemian aesthetic. The collection also features horn pendants mixed with wood, leather tassels and beaded pieces all paired with Heyjow’s signature 22k matte gold hardware.

Aside from earrings, Heyjow’s Savanna Collection showcases gorgeous layered pendants that evoke an exotic but modern look. The result is a luxe tribal feel that’s chic and super wearable. You get good style mileage, too, because their pieces are not just picture-perfect for travel, but also chic enough to wear in the city daily. You can shop for the Savanna Collection exclusively on Heyjow’s online store.

You’re never too fat for jeans

Dear Lucy,

Why do I have breakouts on my back? Am I too fat for jeans? How do I wear sneakers? And since I can’t afford to go to the salon every day, how do I deal with hair that is not rod-straight and silky smooth at all times?

Dayay

Bacne happens because of several factors, the most notorious of which include sweat (keep the area dry, use dri-fit tops as much as possible) and, believe it or not, hair conditioner. Make sure you rinse off the hair conditioner from your back, and if you must, use a sulfur soap to dry the area.

There is no such thing as too fat for jeans; I don’t believe that. I don’t believe in fashion rules, generally, because it should be very fluid in the sense that one has to choose what suits him or her best over what the fashion world says is the trend. That said, I must point out one misnomer, that of wearing only loose clothes when there is excess weight. One who is a bit heavy should not automatically resort to wearing the baggiest of jeans. Choose instead a dark, slim-cut jeans with a high waist in a stretch fabric. You can pair it with a loose top. Just don’t choose a loose top and a loose bottom because that will make you look like you are swimming in your clothes.

Sneakers? That is my problem, too. I always feel that it is better-suited to my daughter and other teenagers like her and I never quite know how to wear them. But when traveling, sneakers make all the difference, comfort-wise. It’s a must-have. That said, in my case, I just follow my daughter’s lead. She teaches me how I should wear sneakers and with what. Another option is to get yourself ballet flats with rubber soles so you get the sleekness of the former but the comfort of the latter, somehow.

More than hair that is rod-straight and silky, it should be clean and healthy. You can be very creative, embracing instead the look of tousled hair instead of fighting it. Sometimes, you can get by with just taming the ends here and there, or you can section hair in two while damp and then put it up in a loose bun while dressing up. Once you release it, your hair will fall in loose, soft waves especially if you have a layered cut. Another trick to tame your tresses is when you shower — apply conditioner first before shampoo, concentrating mid-length till the roots.
