Filipino viewers demand refund for ‘Avengers: Endgame’ with Chinese subtitles
MANILA, Philippines — Days before the much-awaited release of Marvel’s new movie, “Avengers: Endgame,” social media users aired their frustration regarding Southwoods Mall’s announcement that the much-anticipated Marvel movie will be shown in their cinema with Chinese subtitles.
Megaworld Lifestyle Malls posted on April 17 that “Avengers: Endgame” will be shown in their select cinemas with Chinese subtitles.
“Watch the most awaited next installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, #AvengersEndgame, with Chinese subtitles. Showing in select cinemas on April 24,” Southwoods Mall wrote on its Facebook page.
The announcement, however, drew criticism from Facebook users who did not find it a good idea due to the Philippines’ recent controversies with China.
“We don’t even get Filipino subs for these movies and now we might have to sit through one with Chinese subs. PINOYS, AVOID WATCHING IN SOUTHWOODS! Yun na lang solusyon,” a Facebook user commented.
“We demand for a FILIPINO SUBTITLE IN ALL DIALECT BASED ON YOUR MALL LOCATION,” another user commented.
“So ya'll prioritized Chinese subtitles over Tagalog? Huh,” commented by another user.
Some who already bought tickets to the movie also said they wanted to get a refund because of the controversy.
“I bought my tickets in advance yesterday and I was not informed of this. I demand a refund as this is not what I expected from what I paid for. This is infuriating, to be honest. Hear us out,” a Facebook user said.
“I bought 3 tickets for Cinema 2 in Lucky Chinatown and the cashier didn't (inform) me that it has Chinese Subtitles. I want to refund my tickets for this issue,” commented by another user.
The mall, however, clarified that only select cinemas and screenings will have Chinese subtitles.
“As stated in the announcement and indicated in our website, only select cinemas and screenings will have Chinese subtitles. This does not automatically apply to all screenings including those wherein tickets were purchased in advance,” Megaworld Lifestyle Malls’ Facebook page commented to a user.
“We also ensure that customers are properly informed if the screenings they chose will have Chinese subtitles prior to their purchase. Thank you very much.”
