Kamuning Bakery wins QC award

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Kamuning Bakery, owned by Wilson Lee Flores, will be honored with Quezon City’s highest award, the “Manuel L. Quezon Gawad Parangal Award,” tomorrow (Oct. 12) at Smart Araneta Coliseum during the city’s Diamond Jubilee or 75th founding anniversary celebration led by Mayor Herbert Bautista and Vice-Mayor Joy Belmonte.

Described as “Metro Manila’s original artisanal pugon-style bakery,” its diverse clients since 1939 range from ordinary people, students, housewives to artists, showbiz celebrities, singers, national artists and even presidents.

Mayor Herbert said, “The Award is to honor and recognize the achievements and contribution of the Kamuning Bakery as a pioneer enterprise which for decades has produced and offered, not only to residents of Quezon City but to non-residents as well, quality bakery goods over the years, with care and skills that have made your customers happy and satisfied. It is of special significance that Kamuning Bakery will be a Diamond Jubilee Awardee of the City.”

Established in the same year as Quezon City in 1939 by Atty. Leticia Bonifacio Javier and her late husband World War II martyr Lieutenant Marcelo Javier in No. 43 Judge Jimenez Street corner K-1st Street, Kamuning, Quezon City, it continues to pugon bake no-preservatives and no-additives traditional Filipino/Spanish breads, biscuits and cakes.

A real estate entrepreneur and STAR columnist, Wilson Lee Flores bought Kamuning Bakery in December 2013. He has since been reviving its old traditions and also adding new innovations. The 16-time Palanca literary award-winning writer University of the Philippines Prof. Butch Y. Dalisay nominated Kamuning Bakery for the award.
