The multi-talented John Derek
In 1964, John Derek came to Manila with his wife Ursula Andress to shoot the war movie The 26th Cavalry (No Toys for Christmas). He took time out from the set of the film to socialize with Filipino movie stars.
While Derek generally enjoyed his Manila visit, he ‘castigated’ some members of the local press for making unfavorable remarks about him and his young and sexy wife.
Derek was some kind of Pygmalion to Ursula, the Galatea who molded into a Hollywood sex symbol.
He was multi-talented, aside from filmmaking, Derek was into painting and sculpture. During his younger years, he was a college football player.
As an actor, his title credits included Mask of the Avenger, The Adventure of Haiji Baba, The Flesh is Weak, 10 Commandments, Once Before I Die, Childish Things. — RKC
