Ramon Magsaysay Technological University marks centennial

MANILA, Philippines - Ramon Magsaysay Technological University, one of Central Luzon’s leading state technological schools, will mark its centennial founding anniversary from Feb. 8 to 12 in Iba, Zambales.

The weeklong celebration will bear the theme, “Remembering, Celebrating and Envisioning RMTU on its 100th Year” and will highlight the strides it has made since its establishment as a farm school in 1910 by the Americans, according to RMTU president, Dr. Feliciano Rosete.

Named after the former Philippine president, RMTU became a state university on Feb. 12, 1998 with the merger of the Ramon Magsaysay Polytechnic College in Iba, the Western Luzon Agricultural College in San Marcelino, and the Candelaria School of Fisheries in Candelaria.

The school’s organic act, Republic Act 8498, was authored by Zambales Rep. Antonio Diaz.

Rosete added that the Commission on Higher Education lists RMTU as among the top 30 higher educational institutions (HEIs) recognized by the People’s Republic of China, South Korea and other countries.

Festivities kick off on Feb. 8 with an agro-industrial fair, essay writing contest and Quiz Bee on the school’s history, on-the-spot mural painting contest, and a cultural night by the RMTU Performing Arts.

The celebration continues with an alumni motorcade, Lunch for a Cause, bingo socials, and coronation night on Feb. 9, and a national academic colloquium and an evening concert on Feb. 10.

There will also be a centennial parade, field demonstration, street dancing festival, and a variety show on Feb 11.

The event’s highlight is on Feb. 12 with grand alumni homecoming, awarding of achievers, the Centennial President Award, lunch with the alumni, alumni fellowship night, and a fireworks display.

The weeklong observance draws to a close on Feb. 13 with sporting events such as the Centennial Chess Cup Tournament and a badminton exhibition.

RMTU has seven campuses in Zambales, 65 degree programs and 8,000 students, and currently has a Level III-A status under the CHED-DBM-PASUC Leveling Scheme.

Through a strong partnership with the Zambales Provincial Government, municipal governments, and the Department of Education, RMTU has established satellite campuses subsidized by the local governments of Masinloc, Castillejos, and Sta. Cruz towns.
