UP Diliman chancellor: Upsilon Sigma Phi tagged in hazing incident

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The chancellor of the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman on Friday said one of the fraternities within the university has been involved in a hazing incident involving a 17-year-old student.

"I am now able to confirm that it is Upsilon Sigma Phi Fraternity that has been implicated in a hazing incident during which a UP Diliman student sustained severe injuries," UP Diliman Chancellor Dr. Michael Tan said.

Tan said the victim was a minor, and that the family of the student has authorized him to divulge the name of the fraternity. The family will be taking formal legal action next week, he added.

On Thursday, Tan said the UP administration started a probe on the incident. He added that the family of the victim has requested to keep their privacy over the course of the investigation.

"The University of the Philippines respects this request and will exert all efforts to protect the identity of the victim, and his family, even after administrative and legal measures are initiated. The victim is a minor, which makes it all the more important for confidentiality in all the proceedings. Let us spare the family further grief as they go through this extremely difficult crisis," he said.

Tan's statement comes after Guillo Cesar Servando, an 18-year-old culinary student from the De La Salle University- College of St. Benilde, died last Saturday from apparent hazing. Servando's father said his son was targeted by the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity.
