MANILA, Philippines — Flag carrier Philippine Airlines on Friday assured the public that it is prepared to make appropriate adjustments should the impending closure of Boracay for rehabilitation pushes through.
In a statement, PAL said it would be ready to adjust the schedules of flights to and from Caticlan Airport and Kalibo International Airport and assist passengers in rebooking, refunding and rerouting their flights.
“Our adjustments will depend on the scope and duration of the Boracay closure and we will also take into account the need to retain some flights to serve the residents and businesses in Kalibo and the rest of Aklan province,” it said.
To cushion the impact to the country’s tourism, its airline operations and passengers, PAL will also redirect flights to other routes during the temporary closure period.
“PAL will make the necessary public advisories to inform and update the flying public, for our passengers and travel partners,” the flag carrier said.
Cebu Pacific earlier said it would offer “full refunds with opportunities to transfer to other destinations where seats are available.”
It also advised passengers to consider visiting other provinces in the country instead.
The Environment, Tourism and Local Government departments have agreed to recommend the closure of the country’s top tourist destination for six months starting April 26.
President Rodrigo Duterte had repeatedly threatened to shut down Boracay, which he dubbed as a “cesspool.”
Industry leaders in Boracay said a closure would result in the loss of around 36,000 jobs.
