Destileria Limtuaco luring tourists back to Intramuros

MANILA, Philippines — Manila’s Walled City is expected to attract a share of wine enthusiasts, brought by the opening of a distillery museum.

In a statement, Department of Tourism(DOT) Secretary Wanda Teo said the launch of the Destileria Limtuaco Museum in Intramuros would help boost Manila City’s tourism.

“With a lot of Filipinos also being wine and spirit connoisseurs, I am most certain that the museum will be a big hit and will greatly contribute to Manila’s exciting local tourism numbers,” Teo said.

Destileria Limtuaco is the country’s oldest brewery, founded in 1850 by Lim Tua Co.

Olivia Limpe-Aw, a fifth generation master brewer and president of Destileria Limtuaco & Co. Inc. said the museum would show the feats and challenges the 165-year old company faced, from times of war up to the present.

Bottles, barrels and machinery dating back to the 19th century as well as portraits and memorabilia of the generations of who oversaw the brewery can be found in the museum.

The DOT said the opening of the museum would add to the growing number of tourism hotspots in the historic area of Intramuros.
