NEA mulls program to energize farmers
MANILA, Philippines - The National Electrification Administration (NEA) is mulling an electrification program for farmers to help improve their output.
NEA chief Edgardo Masongsong said the agency is currently studying the creation of a program aimed at helping energize farms in the country.
Such programs focused on the farms will give farmers the opportunity to increase production and increase their revenues.
“Let us not just focus on electrifying the nation’s households. Let us focus as well on energizing our country’s farms,” Masongsong said.
Citing an example, the NEA chief said the agency upgraded a traditional fishpond in Aklan which raised its bangus production.
NEA has been implementing two electrification projects: the Sitio Electrification Program (SEP) and the Barangay Line Enhancement Program (BLEP).
Started in 2011, SEP aims to energize sitios through on-grid electrification.
Last year, NEA and its partner electric cooperatives have completed energizing 3,335 sitios nationwide.
For 2017, NEA has committed to electrify 2,140 sitios.
Meanwhile, BLEP aims to reenergize barangay lines using upgraded engineering options.
NEA targets to complete a total of 104 BLEP projects nationwide, of which seven are submarine cable installations and six are tapping point upgrading.
